Vlad

Vrog was nothing like Vlad had expected.

He seemed so human, in the way he looked and in the way he acted. In fact, he looked more human than Vlad.

The guy was nervous, excited, polite, and respectful.

If Vlad had met the guy in a coffee shop, he would have never suspected that he was an alien. Perhaps living alone among humans for so many years with no influence from his savage tribe had softened Vrog, humanized him.

“That’s so thoughtful of you to order snacks for us.” Wendy sat down on the chair Vrog had pulled out for her. “Thank you.”

Perfect manners. Was that the Kra-ell way? Or was it just Vrog?

Wendy was overdoing it, though, trying to infect everyone with her cheerful attitude and defuse the anxious energy in the cramped living room.

Vlad had forgotten how small the dungeon apartment was, or perhaps he hadn’t noticed it before. Now the walls seemed to press in on him, and there wasn’t enough air for him to get in a full breath.

“So, Vlad. Tell me about yourself.”

At least Vrog was just as nervous about their meeting as he was.

“I’m studying graphic design, and I work in a bakery to cover my expenses.”

“He doesn’t need to work,” Stella said. “The clan gives every one of its members who are over twenty-five or enrolled full time in college a share of the clan’s profits. Vlad started baking when he was a senior in high school, and he has continued throughout his studies.”

Vrog nodded his approval. “That’s admirable. We have many spoiled kids from rich families in our school. And even though the tuition is more than enough to pay for a staff of cleaners, I insist on students cleaning their own rooms and performing other chores around the campus. Work builds character.”

“What made you open a school for international students?” Wendy asked.

“Originally, I thought that it would provide me with a great excuse for traveling extensively all over the world. But I discovered that I enjoyed shaping young lives, and I found it very satisfying to see my students reach success.”

That was also such a human thing to say. Then again, Emmett had chosen a similar path once he got away from his tribe, so maybe it wasn’t their human half that had motivated them to become teachers. Maybe once they were free of their leader and their people’s traditions, they sought to learn more about themselves.

Vlad leaned back in the chair. “Did my mother tell you about Emmett?”

Vrog nodded. “The other Kra-ell hybrid that joined your clan.”

“Do you know that he did something similar to you?”

Vrog frowned. “I heard that he founded a cult. That’s not the same thing as running a school. We don’t brainwash our students.”

“Some might call it a cult, and it has cultish attributes, but Emmett really wanted to improve the lives of those who didn’t fit in.” Vlad glanced at Wendy. “Wendy’s mother was one of his followers for many years. Isn’t that a strange coincidence?”

“Indeed.” Vrog smiled at Wendy.
